Hanzawa Masato (半澤 雅人, Hanzawa Masato) is one of the main supporting characters of Sasaki and Miyano and Hirano and Kagiura.
Appearance[]
Hanzawa's trademark is his closed eyes - though he does appear with his eyes open throughout the story from time to time. He is usually shown with a smile on his face, though as remarked, the smile does not always reach his eyes. He has been called terrifying even when he is smiling.
He has pierced ears, but only wears earrings during the night and on his days off.
Personality[]
Hanzawa is an easily amused, rather cryptic senior. Though he puts on a friendly exterior, he is not an easy person to read. He usually keeps his calm and rarely raises his voice. He is also very observant, noticing and remembering little details about the people around him.
Between his various responsibilities such as his two clubs and his dorm headship in his second year, he still makes time to keep an open ear for his juniors and is there to help them out whenever he can. He is often seen teasing his juniors like Kagiura (for liking Hirano), Miyano (because he might not grow taller anymore) and Tashiro, though it is usually not with malicious intent.
At school, he is described to have stellar grades and be involved in most extracurricular projects. He loves being kept busy and is sad to graduate.
Relationships[]
Miyano Yoshikazu[]

Hanzawa's junior at the Disciplinary Committee, who Hanzawa says he is fond of. With Hanzawa describing him as earnest, they work well together at the committee, exchanging light banter and casual conversation between themselves. Hanzawa is ready and willing to help Miyano when he can, whether it be in advice or for school events like the crossdressing contest. He even gives Miyano advice on love and guides him on becoming more confident and persistent in his pursuit of realizing his feelings. Seeing Miyano's journey and love for Sasaki also helps Hanzawa grow less worried for his brother's future, who is similarly into men. Hanzawa offers Miyano to be his replacement for Disciplinary Committee Chairman, which he initially refuses but later agrees to.
Sasaki Shuumei[]
Hanzawa's classmate. Though they are not particularly close, neither feel poorly towards each other and, in Hirano and Kagiura, Sasaki and Hanzawa are often seen together in the same group being on friendly terms with each other. Though Hanzawa has suspicions about Sasaki and Miyano's relationship, he does not particularly interfere.
Hirano Taiga[]

Hirano staring at Hanzawa
Hanzawa's classmate and friend. Hanzawa and Hirano have a tight connection: Hanzawa is the president of the Disciplinary Committee while Hirano is the vice president, both of them live in the dorms, and they often have meals and study together. Hirano even goes to Hanzawa for advice on occasion. Hanzawa is deeply invested in Hirano's relationship with Kagiura, which he does not think is typical for roommates, though Hirano assures him that nothing is going on.
Kagiura Akira[]
Hanzawa's junior at the dorm. While Kagiura is shown to be somewhat afraid of Hanzawa, the latter cannot stop teasing his junior. Though he never addresses it directly, it is clear that Hanzawa is well aware of Kagiura's feelings for Hirano. Though Hanzawa is seemed to be initially worried by it, he does not seem to let it affect their relationship, and Hanzawa shows that he cares about Kagiura in little ways.
Kitagawa Yashiro[]
Hanzawa's roommate. One year younger than Hanzawa, Kitagawa Yashiro (北河 八代) is a cheerful boy, and their relationship as roommates appears to be very close. They are on a first name basis, with Yashiro calling Hanzawa "Masato-san."
Hanzawa's Family[]

The older Hanzawa brothers
Hanzawa's family is quite large, with three siblings (an older brother Masaomi, and a younger brother Masaki and older sister Masako). When he returns home from the dorms, it is difficult for him to get any privacy.
Hanzawa Masaomi[]
Hanzawa Masaomi, Hanzawa's older brother, has some impact on Hanzawa's perception of gay people. Masaomi and Hanzawa's younger brother (Hanzawa Masaki) came out to their mother at the same time, leaving Hanzawa as the only boy who could deliver future grandchildren. Though Hanzawa is not against his brothers' sexuality, he seems to worry a lot about their relationships. Masaomi also worries for Hanzawa: initially because he believed Hanzawa simply covered up for his gay brothers by saying he did not swing that way, and also because Hanzawa has not found anyone special yet. Masaomi himself is close friends with Ogasawara's older brother Ichirou, and Ogasawara's girlfriend Eimi believes they are a couple.
